Since former president Carlos Menem made an end to a state run economy that provided job security, education and healthcare the gap between the rich and poor has grown. The bank restrictions that were imposed in December and January however had for the first time an impact on Argentina's middle and higher classes. After living for years above their means suddenly they felt the pain of their country's economic problems. In the country's new cashless society everyone had to look for creative ways to survive. Here a traders market in Quilmes, one of Buenos Aires middle class neighborhoods where goods and services are exchanged.
