The port at River Plate has been of great importance for Argentina's export industry of beef and grain. While Buenos Aires was founded in 1536 the city only started to flourish after former colonial power Spain allowed direct transatlantic trade with it's port in 1776. Before 1776 goods had to come from Spain via Panama and Peru as was stated by a decree of the King of Spain in 1594. Here some fishermen pass the day.
