At the bartering market in Quilmes sellers display catholic symbols made from tree leafs and painted with varnish. Although Catholicism is no longer the state religion and the President does not have to be Catholic about 90 percent of the Argentine population is Catholic and the Catholic Church is still an influential power. After President Duhalde was inaugurated the Catholic Church urged political parties, unions, companies and government institutions to acknowledge their mistakes and adopt a policy of change in a document called "To rebuild the Fatherland." The Catholic Church also said it was ready to foster a dialogue among the different political sectors in order to bring back harmony to the country.
