MARCH 2003 -- Pelican Island, Florida -- Audubon Magazine -- Pelican Island Is the first wildlife refuge in the US, just celebrated it's centenial celebration.  President Teddy Roosvelt enacted the legislation for the island in the height of the Great Florida Bird Wars. Originally it was over five acres now just over two acres big. US Wildlife officers replenish the sandbars with Oyster shells. .
